How to cycle safely on the roads?

Following these simple rules will help you to cycle safely on the roads (no matter where in the world you are)

  1. Awareness:  The number 1 rule for cycling safely on the roads is to have an awareness of yourself and your surroundings at all times. Pay attention to what is happening further down the road and avoid wearing headphones so that you can listen out for passing vehicles. Try to preempt what other road users are going to do. Do not get caught out by a lazy motorist that decides to turn without indicating. Drugs and alcohol impair your spatial awareness and reaction speeds, avoid cycling under the influence to stay safe on the road.

  2. Respect the rules of the road:  If you are choosing to cycle on the road, you should follow the rules like other motorists have to. Do not run red lights or go the wrong way up a one-way system. Not only does it make the cycling community look disrespectful and reckless, but it can also be incredibly dangerous. If a car is driving through a  green light, they will not be expecting a cyclist to dart out in front of them from the other direction. Ride predictably and abide by the law of the country you are cycling in.

  3. Dress to be seen:  The top complaint by motorists about cyclists on the road is that they find it difficult to see them, especially in low light or poor weather conditions. Invest in a bright front/backlight and a high vis reflective jacket for when it is overcast, raining or low visibility.

  4. Cycle safely on the roads:  Hopefully, you will never need to use it, but wearing a well-fitted cycling helmet is a good safety measure should the worst happen and you come off your bike on the road. Keeping yourself safe while cycling does not have to be complicated. Ride predictably and maintain an awareness of your surroundings, respect the rules of the road and dress to be seen.
